Kayak Roof Racks

Kayak Roof RackIt's a good idea that you make the investment and purchase a kayak transport system that is specially designed for kayaks. This will allow you to haul your kayaks safely and conveniently.

Manufacturers like Yakima and Thule now offer a good variety of kayak transport options designed specifically to tranport a kayak. These racks consist of a pair of bars that attach to your vehicle's rain gutters or clip to the top edge of the doors. Many attachments are available, including saddles and kayak stackers. Saddles cradle the boat safely, while stackers make it possible to transport multiple boats next to one another on their sides.

Foam saddle systems are cartop carriers that attach using load straps. Foam blocks fit between the kayak and the roof. Everything is held in place by a few nylon load straps. Foam saddle systems are popular because they're very inexpensive and easy to install. The security they provide is really not acceptable and much less than that of permanent and lockable rack system. Foam saddles are not recommended for frequent or long-term use or high-speed (Interstate) driving.

Kayak Trailers

Kayak Trailer ImageA kayak trailer is really the ultimate transport system for single or multiple kayaks. A lightweight, galvanized boat trailer is probably the first thing that comes to mind, and they're available new for as low as three hundred dollars. You don't need a lot of carrying capacity, but it's nice to have a little weight in back of you, or very windy conditions could cause hazardous trailer sway. In addition, a lightweight boat trailer is going to be designed more for hauling an aluminum fishing boat, rather than a kayak, and it will take some modifications to even haul one kayak. There are trailers specifically designed for hauling kayaks and they save you the task of lifting, loading, and unloading your kayaks from the height disadvantage of a roof rack. A good trailer saves alot of wear and tear on your back.

Kayak Carts

Kayak Cart ImageA kayak cart is simply a rigid or folding cart that attaches easily to the bow, stern, or midsection of your kayak. They're very useful when you must move your kayak over uneven ground or have a long trip to reach the beach. They're a much better alternative to hoisting your kayak by the cockpit cowling and trying to lug and balance it by hand. That's a great way to throw your back out, particularly with the heavier kayaks.

Let's take a more detailed look at some of the best kayak transport options available.
