A Recreational Kayak is suitable for day trips and week-end outings on protected lakes and mild rivers. They have a moderate rocker (banana shape) and are usually less than 15 feet long with a beam (width) of 25-31 inches.

The cockpits of recreational kayaks are usually roomy, which makes entry and exit a pleasure, but causes these boats to fill with water if you take a spill. They usually don't contain bow or stern flotation. Flotation is usually achieved with bow and stern flotation bags.

As manufacturers continue to refine the design of recreational kayaks, you'll continue to see such extras as bulkheads and perimeter lines. Most models paddle very well.

These models are also great for kids because of their wide beam stability and transport easily on your roof rack or other carrier. Also, as with many touring kayaks, you can purchase tandem models that allow two people to enjoy the water together.
